I know what the scourge of inequality and discrimination looks like. I’ve seen it all my life, and experienced it myself. I’ve seen people in our city beaten down by unfair rules, by systems that don’t treat them fairly, by employers who don’t respect workers’ rights – with the odds stacked against them.
In the courtroom, in the Town Hall, in our communities, I’ve fought for fairness and to break down the barriers that hold people back. It’s why I set up Sheffield’s Race Equality Commission, to tackle discrimination in our city.
I’ve seen first hand how laws can cement inequality, like the Tories’ hostile environment approach to asylum seekers, but I also know how a Labour government can use legislation as a tool for greater equality. I’m ready to make the most of this opportunity and take my experience to Westminster to create a more equal society.
