My story

Sheffield is my home, and throughout my life it’s given me a lot

I’m proud to be the first Yemeni person and the first woman of Arab descent elected to the UK Parliament. Despite leaving school with only four GCSEs, I became a teacher and then a lawyer and have dedicated myself to community development.
I have worked tirelessly to empower marginalised communities, founding a law firm in 2014 to provide legal aid to vulnerable individuals and implementing initiatives to improve education and health outcomes.
As a senior councillor for Firth Park in Sheffield, I played a crucial role in navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritising the safety and education of children. I have been a vocal advocate for racial justice, establishing the Race Equality Commission to address systemic inequalities.
With my strong legal background, community leadership, and political experience, I now champion the interests of my constituents in Parliament.
